Indiana Jones 4 is the working title of the long-awaited fourth and (theoretically) final film in the Indiana Jones series of films. The film will be the twenty-sixth chronologically in a series of film and TV productions about the adventures of the heroic fictional archaeologist Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford will return to the title role, and Steven Spielberg will direct.
The film has been gestating since the release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with various false production starts and screenwriters. Currently, it is scheduled to commence shooting in June 2007 for a May 2008 release in North America. Writer and executive producer George Lucas stated in the May 2005 issue of Time magazine that he does not plan to make any more Indiana Jones films after this one.

Development

Rumors of the film's production have persisted for more than a decade, starting with the 1992 release by LucasArts adventure game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, dubbed "Indiana Jones 4" by some fans, as it was falsely considered to be an official precursor. In 1995, Last Crusade writer Jeffrey Boam was asked to pen a script for the next installment of the Indiana Jones series.[citation needed]Frank Darabont was hired in May 2002 to write the script. It was to be set in the 1950s to accomodate Ford's age, as well as using non-Nazi villains, but in 2004 Lucas expressed dissatisfaction and work began on a new story.
Jeff Nathanson was hired eight months after Darabont's departure. David Koepp was hired on June 23, 2006 to polish Nathanson's script.
On December 29, 2006, George Lucas confirmed that, after years in development hell, he and Steven Spielberg have finished polishing David Koepp's script, and that Indiana Jones 4 will commence filming in 2007. However, the exact shooting locations have yet to be determined, although part of the film will be shot in Los Angeles, California. Lucas noted that the film will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries." He also explained that "It's going to be fantastic. It's going to be the best one yet." Shooting will begin in June 2007.

Story

Little information on the actual story has been released, with conflicting rumors based on the numerous screenplay drafts written by several writers circulating among Indy fans for over a decade. Frank Darabont's early screenplay received the most press attention, as it was the first time a real push was made by a prominent screenwriter to put together a script for Indiana Jones 4 in 2003. Rumors involving Darabont's screenplay included tidbits such as the story taking place in the 1950s, taking the Nazis out of the film series, and re-uniting Indy's girlfriends from all three previous films. However, all these rumors were cast into doubt in 2005 when this screenplay was rejected outright, and Jeff Nathanson was brought in to help George Lucas write an entirely new story for the film, which has since been approved by Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Harrison Ford. Long-time Indiana Jones producer Kathleen Kennedy has recently commented that Nathanson's story takes place in the 1940s, but revealed no other information yet.
On August 8, 2006, Lucas told Empire magazine, "'I discovered a McGuffin,' continues Lucas, still reluctant to name said McGuffin. 'I told the guys about it and they were a little dubious about it, but it’s the best one we’ve ever found… Unfortunately, it was a little too ‘connected’ for the others. They were afraid of what the critics would think. They said, 'Can’t we do it with a different McGuffin? Can’t we do this?' and I said 'No.' So we pottered around with that for a couple of years. And then Harrison really wanted to do it and Steve said, 'Okay.' I said, 'We’ll have to go back to that original McGuffin and take out the offending parts of it and we’ll still use that area of the supernatural to deal with it."
